Windows-On-Our-Waters® is dedicated to raising the awareness of school children and the general public concerning the issues of watershed protection and preservation; motivating them and giving them the tools they need to help stop the amount of pollutants reaching our aquatic, coastal and marine ecosystems and empowering them to become active environmental stewards.

Gary Poe

Gary A. Poe

Executive Director

Mr. Poe is a member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), the Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (AEOE), the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA), the Southwest Marine/Aquatic Educators Association (SWMEA) and The Nature Conservancy. He is a member of the CREEC – LA leadership team.

He has participated in the banding of egrets and herons at the Salton Sea and of neo-tropical migrants in the Santa Monica Mountains, as part of an ongoing program conducted by Santa Monica College under the direction of Walt Sakai. Gary also has tagged monarch butterflies in Malibu and Goleta, California, again as part of a study by Walt Sakai of Santa Monica College.

As a teacher, Gary spent three years at California International University and seven years as the Senior Educator at Safe Moves — an award winning Children's Transportation and Safety Education Organization. He was the science/environment educator at Venice Camp in Los Angeles and a docent at the William O. Douglas Outdoor Classroom (WODOC).

Gary attended Kent State University and is a 1968 graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He has appeared Off-Off Broadway, Off-Broadway and on Broadway in a wide variety of plays from Shakespeare to the avant-garde.

A co-founder of the Oldcastle Theatre Company in Bennington, Vermont, Gary last appeared there in 1999 in Later Life by A. R. Gurney. In 2008 Oldcastle Theatre Company celebrates its thirtieth-sixth year of continuous operation and is recognized as one of the premiere resident theatres in New England.

Mr. Poe is the author of the children’s play Going…Going…Gone. You can read it here. In its current form the play addresses issues in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, but it is easily adaptable for any geographic area.
